Weight Loss for Pregnancy

Friday, November 22, 2013

Want to be pregnant or is your weight impacting your fertility?

5 to 10 % of weight loss has been associated with improvement in fertility. Weight loss prior to pregnancy can be good for your health and your future child's health. Overweight mothers are more likely to have delivery or pregnancy issues including unplanned caesarean section, failure of epidural, high blood pressure, pregnancy induced diabetes and increased bleeding during delivery. Overweight mothers may impact their babies potential for behavioural conditions and life long obesity risk.

As weight loss during pregnancy is not a safe option it is better to improve your health prior to your pregnancy. Weight loss can be achieved with changes to lifestyle measures. These measures will not impact your life more than a newborn. The Healthy Weight Clinic is managed by a Nurse Practitioner who supports you in your weight loss journey. The clinic is bulk billed and operates with a collaborative agreement with Dr Lockie as required by Health Law. All Healthy Weight Clinic patients have access to all the services in the Dr Lockie’s practice to support their weight loss choices and options. This include Dietician, Psychologist, Support group and other weight loss procedures.

What to consider before weight loss surgery

Monday, November 11, 2013

Dr Lockie’s Practice uses a multidisciplinary approach to weight loss. The integrated team of highly skilled professionals is key to our patient’s success. This approach achieves excellent results long term with your weight loss.

What does this mean?

We want all our patients to attend the allied health appointments to have the best longer-term weight loss not just to have bariatric surgery. This is focused on the long-standing program of before and after care. Our team has studied the effect of this intervention, which is delivered to each individual patient.

When comparing our practice cost and services to other practice please consider the following:

  • All patients will have pre and post operative education program and follow up coordinated by an experience advanced practice nurse.
  • All patients will have a risk assessment completed prior to surgery to provide the safest surgical option for you.
  • All patients will attend pre and operative dietician and psychology sessions to achieve the best success of long-term weight loss.
  •  All patients found to have a hiatus hernia will have where clinically appropriate, repaired at time of bariatric surgery to reduce the amount of reflux post surgery. This will minimize the requirement for subsequent surgery.

Dr Lockie’s practice long-term weight loss is impressive with most patients experiencing greater than 75% of their excess weight loss (the amount you need to lose).

Our practice has a support group open to only our practice patients to assist you to maintain your weight loss for your healthy future.

Our follow up services are there for life should you need them.

The combination of all these services has resulted in excellent patient success stories. We have results in weight loss, or remission of medical conditions such as normalizing blood pressure.

What we strive to achieve most of all is improved quality of life.

We hope you will allow US to assist you in your weight loss journey.

Dietary Advancement Post Sleeve Gastrectomy

Thursday, May 02, 2013

It has come to my attention that a Brisbane-based practice is providing their laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy patients with literature whereby solid foods are being introduced within the first week following their procedure. We wish to advise that we do not support this instruction and that we strongly recommend you follow our liquid dietary guidelines after your surgery.

You are provided with clear fluids in hospital and then progress to free fluids (or nourishing liquids) for 2 weeks duration when you are discharged home. This allows your stomach pouch to heal, reduces the risk of potential leaks and signficantly decreases any discomfort or pain that is associated with eating solids too soon after the surgery. It also ensures you are able take in sufficient volumes for hydration and adequate protein for good recovery. This intervention is evidence-based and is reinforced by our many years of experience in this field.
