The 2024 BSR Report has been released and it highlights Bariatric Surgery as a cost effective long term solution to the management of obesity and its associated comorbidities.
Read a summary of the report here.
There were over 13,000 primary bariatric procedures reported to the BSR last year (around 80% of all procedures are reported to BSR), with almost 80% of those being gastic sleeve. Gastric Bypass and SADI make up the bulk of the remainder of procedures.
Excellent Outcomes For Patients
The good news is that bariatric surgery continues to be effective in reducing weight long term and reducing prevalence of deseases like diabetes.
About 80% with diabetes reported no diabetes, almost 70% of those taking insulin, were off insulin, almost 50% of those same people reported taking no medication for diabetes, all after 12 months post surgery.
Average % total weight loss was reported for the following procedures (over 4 years):
- Gastric Sleeve: ~30%
- SADI/S: ~35%
- Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass: ~32%
Other Statistics
The number of procedures perform in 2024 was down by about a third on the high points in 2021 and 2018, probably due to increase in the use of weight loss drugs and general cost of living pressures.
Those pressures are really felt by patients who were in the private health system for almost 95% of surgeries.
Overall, there was a complicationrate of around 2.3% after 90 days across all procedures which took in readmissions to hospital or ICU or any other reported adverse event.
