Kirsty's Weight Loss Journey
Time To Prioritise My Health
For several years, I had been considering gastric surgery, especially after observing friends and family undergo similar procedures with varying degrees of success. However, the timing never felt quite right due to work commitments and the demands of full-time employment.
As I approached retirement, I knew it was finally the right time to prioritise my health and wellbeing. With more time to focus on becoming active and improving my quality of life, I was also increasingly aware of the comorbidities that had begun to impact my long-term health—pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, and fatty liver disease with alarmingly high blood readings. These were no longer issues I could ignore.
An Individualised Plan Based on My Health Needs
At my first consultation, I arrived expecting to undergo a gastric sleeve procedure. However, after a thorough review of my medical history, Dr. Lockie recommended the SADI-S procedure (Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy) as the most effective option for my situation. I appreciated the detailed information provided, which allowed me to make a well-informed decision.
A special thank you to NP Shirley Lockie for her wise counsel and the time she spent educating me on the importance of proper sleep in relation to weight loss. It was eye-opening to learn the significant impact sleep apnoea was having on my health. The sleep study confirmed its severity, and using a CPAP machine truly changed my life—improving not only my sleep but also my energy and ability to commit fully to this journey. I even managed to travel with it on a cruise and during two weeks in Asia—something I never thought I'd do!
I've Experienced A Number Of Benefits
- Normalised blood pressure (no longer requiring medication)
- Significant improvement in fatty liver disease markers
- No longer pre-diabetic
- Resolution of sleep apnoea
- Healthier eating habits and smaller portion sizes
- Increased energy and mobility
- A wardrobe transformation—30 bags of size 14–20 clothes donated, and I now comfortably wear size 10–12
- The ability to navigate stairs and be more active day-to-day
Despite Challengers - Ultimate Success
Of course, there have been some challenges—like adjusting to a windy stomach, managing fluid intake, some hair loss for a month although it's not an issue now, and changing food preferences (red meat and oily foods are no longer appealing, although that might be more of a pro than a con!).
There was also a minor hiccup with the anaesthetic process, as I happened to fall into the rare group with complications. But thanks to the calm and reassuring support I received post-surgery, everything was handled with professionalism and care, leading to a successful outcome.
While weight loss wasn't my primary goal, the results have been remarkable. I began this journey at 94.4 kg and, six months post-surgery, I am now 64.4 kg.
Thank's To Dr Lockie and His Team
I'm also deeply thankful for the ongoing support from Michelle (Dietitian), who has been so helpful in guiding me through nutritional adjustments—especially when I recently struggled with protein intake.
And I truly value the insight and emotional support provided by Michele (Psychologist), whose guidance helped me prepare mentally and emotionally for each stage of this transformation.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have been in the care of such a dedicated, knowledgeable, and compassionate team.
Dr. Lockie, your professionalism and expertise have changed my life, and I will always be grateful for the health and vitality I now enjoy heading into retirement.
With heartfelt thanks.
