Dr Phil Lockie - Robotics Expertise

Being a leading Laparoscopic Surgeon, particularly in the realms of hernia and bariatrics, Dr Phil Lockie is not content to rely on past practice where proven new techniques and methods have been researched and established around the world.

In recent years Dr Phil has taken on the training with robotics as a way to improve patient outcomes with some procedures in his areas of expertise.

Now an experienced robotic surgeon, he has been recently conducting outreach with General Practitioners to provide insight into many conditions which might benefit from the use of robotics.

Here is a brief overview of some of his activities in this space.

General Practitioners Hernia Information Night and Dinner - 6th July 2023 MODA Restaurant

About a dozen GPs, along with some physiotherapists attended to hear  Dr Phil and Paul Peglar (exercise physiologist) discuss assessment and management of groin pain and inguinal hernia.

The evening was very successful with information on groin pain assessment, including imaging techniques, diagnosis and treatment.

The discussion on robotic surgery was interactive with videos illustrating these techniques and patient outcomes.

Having a robotic surgery skillset allows more technically challenging patients (revisional /obese) the best option for a successful outcome and can avoid the need for an open operation.

Central to Dr Phil's philosophy on patient care is that there cannot be a one size fits all approach. It is vital that each patient's individual circumstances and diagnosis is the guiding principle behind the required method of care.

With so much in the news on when to discuss weight, we, as a practice, would like to reiterate, it is the analysis, discussion and follow up which is important in meeting your patient's individual needs.

Here is a pictorial of the event.

Webinar - Update on Robotic Surgery - July 26, 2023

This doctors' webinar and Q and A session was held in conjunction with St Andrews Hospital. Dr Lockie  presented on robotics as it relates to hernias and his colleague, Dr Matt Roberts, presented on urological robotic surgery.

All delegates had an opportunity to ask questions of both surgeons and engage in discussion.

Dr Lockie discussed the advantages of abdominal wall repair utilising the robot and was able to show some videos of the robot in action repairing complex groin and ventral hernias. He also noted that inguinal hernias can be repaired robotically at the same time as a urologist is performing a robotic prostate procedure.

Surgical Robotic Society International Meeting - Melbourne 2023.

Dr Phil recently attended this conference and reported to some of his colleagues in a regular communication to them:

Some of the highlights of the meeting were the new robotic platforms that are becoming available from around the world, and it is certainly exciting to see the innovation that is arising in the world of robotic surgery and the potential for the future.

I also took the opportunity of observing and discussing robotic procedures with some of the world's leading robotic surgeons. Of particular interest was robotic hernia repair encompassing inguinal, ventral, and incisional hernia repairs.  In addition, there was a very interesting section on robotic management of stomal hernias which can be a particularly difficult hernia to deal with.

There were also some interesting presentations of unusual and rare types of hernias such as lumbar, and flank hernias as well as diaphragmatic hernias.

As you can tell by this report, Dr lockie's description of himself as a "hernia nerd" is accurate. For his hernia patients, that's good news.

Dr Lockie will continue to research and develop his unique skillset at meetings and conferences in Dijon and Austin later this year, 2023.
