Is There a Best Place To Inject GLP-1s ?

A recently read an article highlighting a social media post by a prominent New York based obesity expert, Michelle E. Gordon, DO, which brought attention to some myths around GLP-1 injecting sites.

The post elicited over 100 reactions and almost 150 comments on social media at the time of writing.

Whilst many individuals may have strong opinions on this subject, there is clear evidence in the research that provides good guidlines to achieve success.

That is not to say that some people may develop individual preferences, but we strongly recommend that patients stay within the guidelines and not be swayed by loud voices on social media.

What Are The GLP-1 Facts?

Manufacturers Recommend Abdomen, Thigh, or Upper Arm. The upper arm can be difficult and may need the assistance of another person because of reach limitations.

The article had some other key points:

  • There is no proven GLP-1 injection site superiority for efficacy or tolerability.
  • FDA (USA) approved SC sites: abdomen, thigh, upper arm.
  • You should rotate sites weekly to reduce scar tissue formation.
  • Patient-reported nausea/preferences vary.
    • These are anecdotal and may not reflect the most common scenarios
    • Be guided by proven evidence-based research.

Furthermore, it is important that the injection goes beneath your skin and should be administered subcutaneously, not intramuscularly. In other words, inject where there is subcutaneous fat.
