Research Confirms Efficacy Of Support Groups

Dr Lockie's Practice  - A Pioneer In Multidisciplinary Weight Loss Care

We are very proud as a practice to have what we believe to be the longest running patient support group in Australia. This support group has been funded by the practice since we started bariatric surgery nearly 20 years ago and has been facilitated throughout by Dr Michele van Vuuren, our team psychologist.

Our Methods Backed By Recent Research

It is therefore heartening to read a publication from the American Society of Metabolic Bariatric Surgery in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases published in February 2026*, that reported that support group attendance was associated with better weight loss, better self management, and better adherence to guidelines following surgery.

This review article supported the recommendation for a support group to be part of an interdisciplinary care of patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery. The study identified the 18 publications dating from 1998 to 2023. The study suggested that not only was there a positive benefit in terms of long term weight loss from attending a support group, but there was also benefits for patients who experienced weight recurrence, to attend a support group.

Our support group remains open to all of our patients who have attended the practice either for weight loss surgery or metabolic medical weight management.

How Might That Help You

If you are not already a Dr Lockie Patient, you can qualify for attendance by attending a free (medicare funded) consulation with our SCOPE certified NP, Shirley Lockie. Bariatric Surgery is not a prerequisite to attend Support Groups.

Shirley will carry out a metabolic assessment, present weight loss options (surgical and non surgical), and answer any questions you might have about surgery, medical weight loss or other appropriate interventions. She can also refer to Dr Lockie or other specialists as appropriate.

Note From Dr Lockie

Medications will be assessed pre-operatively and post-operatively. With weight-loss and particularly after surgery, comorbidities can change for the better, particularly e.g., hypertension or diabetes. It is essential for your health that medications are discussed with you, your GP and/or any other specialists such as Cardiologist or Endocrinologist etc.

In addition, use of multivitamins, and alternative supplements should be discussed with the practice to promote your better health.
