Research Highlights Potential Osteoporosis Risks With GLP1s

Recent developments in GLP-1 research highlight a potential risk of osteoporosis and osteomalacia.

With this in mind, is is important that patients are active in seeking regular care to ensure that the risks are managed appropriately and successfully.

Blood Tests

Key considerations include:

  • Blood work focusing on vitamin D, calcium, and parathyroid levels.
  • Other important metabolic indicators such as iron, B12, and folate.

Understanding the significance of our blood work is crucial. For years, we have been studying metabolic markers in collaboration with endocrinologists, cardiologists, and physicians, alongside my ongoing studies with the World Obesity Federation.

Metabolism is a delicate balancing act. If one element is depleted, be it copper, selenium, or zinc, the body must compensate This can impact metabolic efficiency. Regular check-ins and discussions with a metabolic healthcare professional are essential.

Further Testing

The Bone Mineral Density Scan (BMD) is the definitive test used to ensure that the care you are getting is effective.

We generally use following protocol*:

  • Patients on GLP1 therapy: BMD within a year of commencement
  • Normal bariatric patients: BMD within a year of surgery
  • Those diagnosed with osteoporosis osteopenia: BMD within two years of diagnosis

*These are general guidelines. Every patient is different, so individual diagnosis will determine patient care in each case.

Other Factors

Additionally, maintaining clean nutrition, regular exercise, and good sleep contributes significantly to metabolic health.

Note From Dr Lockie

Medications will be assessed pre-operatively and post-operatively. With weight-loss and particularly after surgery, comorbidities can change for the better, particularly e.g., hypertension or diabetes. It is essential for your health that medications are discussed with you, your GP and/or any other specialists such as Cardiologist or Endocrinologist etc.

In addition, use of multivitamins, and alternative supplements should be discussed with the practice to promote your better health.
