Screening For Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Here at Dr Phil Lockie's Practice we aim to achieve the best outcome for every individual.

When it comes to metabolic or bariatric surgery, the program with the multidisciplinary team provides a clear pathway of care for each patient.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

One of the screening tools in the program is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

We appreciate this test is not offered everywhere, but here are the details why it is so important for your success and why we as a team screen for it.If you attend the support group, you will be able to ask Dr Phil Lockie’s patients and hear honest answers.

  • The risk of OSA doubles with every 10kg wt. gain (if your patient has gained 10 Kg in one year their level of sleep apnoea will generally have increased to the next level.)
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS): 30% BMI>35•Lack of sleep increases risk of obesity.
  • OSA: 2.5x risk of car accidents; increased risk of stroke/coronary heart disease/heart failure. Increased risk of overall cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Bariatric surgery can result in 60-70% resolution of OSA.

On analysis of Dr Phil Lockie's recent SADI data (Single Anastomosis Duodenal Ileal Bypass) 65 % had OSA and required preoperative treatment.

There are psychological and nutritional benefits too:

  • “Sleep deprivation can lead to an increase in energy consumption in the absence of an increase in energy expenditure” (Okoli A, et al 2021)
  • There is a relationship between “liking high fat foods and OSA”. (SMITH, S. S., et al 2014)
