Here is the report from the Patient Driven Support Group for October 2026, from our session convenor, Michéle Van Vuuren.
Weight Loss Support Group October 2026
Our Support Group on Tuesday 6 October was well attended by both new and long-term patients. The patient-led discussion focused on emotional eating, with members sharing strategies they have found helpful, including being kind to themselves and setting realistic expectations.
A key psychological theme was black-and-white thinking: seeing eating choices or progress as either "perfect" or a "failure".
Thoughts such as "I've eaten something I shouldn't, so the whole day is ruined" can lead to guilt and make it harder to return to helpful habits.
A useful strategy is to pause, notice the all-or-nothing thought, and replace it with a more balanced response: "One eating choice does not undo my progress. What is one helpful thing I can do next?"
This encourages flexibility, self-compassion and a focus on progress rather than perfection.
Sharing experiences also provided valuable connection and encouragement.
